West Lake
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province
Of the 36 lakes in China sharing the name, West Lake of Hangzhou is the most famous and is actually the one that all the other west lakes were modeled after. It originally started out as a lagoon until the 8th century when the governor of Hanghzou had it dredged and later built a dyke to completely cut it off from the Qiantang River. The lake sits 3km by 3km and has two causeways that you can bike or walk along. Many of the sights around the lake are associated with famous Chinese literature and the famous people who once lived there.
