Jingshan Park-"Coal Hill"    BEIJING, Beijing Municipality

Jingshan Park is an artificial hill which was made from the earth dug out to make the moat of the Forbidden City. Originally named Meishan ("Beautiful Mountain"), Westerners confused the name with mei meaning "coal" and gave it the name "Coal Hill." This park is directly in front of the north exit of the Forbidden City and is said to protect the palace from evil spirits. Atop the hill, one can see an impressive panoramic view of the city and palace.
