Humble Administrator's Garden
Suzhou, Jiangsu Province
The Humble Administrator's Garden is considered to be one of the best gardens in Suzhou, and is certainly the largest. The garden was designed in the 16th century by Wang Xianchen, a retired Ming dynasty official - and later sold by his son to pay for gambling debts. It is said that Wang was inspired by a Chinese saying, 'To cultivate his garden and to see his vegetable crop is the occupation of a humble man'. The garden features a teahouse, small museum, bonsai garden, islets, and bridges. Its best-known feature is its use of water with interconnected islands and waterfront pavilions.
