Big Wild Goose Pagoda

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda ("Dayanta") was built during the Tang dynasty by Emperor Gao Zhong in 648AD. He built this temple in honor of his mother, Empress Wende, and during the Tang dynasty this was the most famous temple in Chang'an (the former name of Xi'an). It was also built to house the hundreds of volumes of scriptures brought from India by Xuan Zang (602-664), a famous Buddhist emissary.
