China -> Dazu
Chongqing Municipality

The carvings at Dazu combine influences from Confucianism, Daoism, and Indian Tantric Buddhism to create some of the finest crafted statuary. The 50,000-plus carvings focus more on the human subject, which differs from most religious carvings. This art was created during the Tang and Qing dynasties and was overseen by the monk Zhao Zhifeng between 1179 and 1245. The carvings are located in two places, Beishan and Baodingshan. Beishan is best known for the Thousand Buddha Cave in which presides the Peacock King over his many miniature Buddhas. Baodingshan has over 10,000 figures on a horseshoe shaped cliff beneath a hill. The most recognized figure here is the Reclining Buddha, a 100ft effigy of Sakyamuni issuing his final teachings. This area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
