China -> Kunming
Kunming
Yunnan Province

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province and nicknamed "City of Eternal Spring" due to its pleasant weather and abundant flora. The city received its name from the minority group that once lived here, the Kunmi, who are now extinct. Kunming is an ancient city, sitting at 6,500 ft (2,000m) above sea level, which flourished under the Nanzhao Kingdom. By the 13th century, the city was already cosmopolitan but became even more so during the 1930s when the British and French lent their influences through Burma and Indochina, respectively. The Burma Road, a daring feat, cut 625 miles (1,000km) into the mountains enabling the British and Americans to ship supplies through Kunming during the Japanese resistance. The area is still full of historic temples and pagodas, though it is fast becoming indistinguishable from the other major cities of China. Most people come to Kunming to see its famous Stone Forest southeast of the city.
