Lhasa, the holy capital of Tibet and its heart and soul, is a destination of pilgrimage and spirituality. The isolated Tibet has been difficult to reach until recently with the construction of a railway and new airports. Despite the harsh conditions of the Tibetan plateau, the Tibetan people have a soft spirituality and demeanor that envelops you when you arrive. They have managed to keep their culture and religion alive in spite of mounting pressure from the Chinese government.
The most recognizable structure in Lhasa is the Potala Palace with its towering white walls and orange roof. Its political symbolism is incredibly important to the Tibetan people. However, their spiritual heart is the Jokhang Temple, which is the most sacred and active temple in Tibet. It is easy to understand why this beautiful land has captivated our imaginations.
