Tongli is another canal town along the Grand Canal and sits about 11mi (18km) from Suzhou, and the two are usually seen together. While as quaint as other canal towns, Tongli is surprisingly pretty and holds claim to a UNESCO World Heritage listing for its Tuisi Garden. The garden was built in 1885 by a retired government official, Ren Lansheng. It is considered to be one of the finest gardens in the area and is said to rival any garden in Suzhou. The town has 49 picturesque stone bridges and recently acquired the Chinese Ancient Sex Culture Museum.
