Wuzhen, one of the many canal towns that line the Great Canal, sits about halfway between Shanghai and Hangzhou. Like many of the other water towns, Wuzhen has small winding alleyways that lead you past museums and little shops selling all kinds of locally made wares. This is a great spot to find some real gems, as it is usually a little too far for the average Shanghai tourist. A worthwhile stop is the Shadow Puppet Play House, where intricately sewn leather puppets tell ancient stories through the use of their shadows. This is a dying art and Wuzhen is one of the few places one can still see a show. Another spot worth checking out is the rice wine distillery that comes with a tasting session at the end.
