Jokhang Temple
Lhasa,
The golden-roofed Jokhang Temple was built in 647AD and is nearly 1,300 years old. Tibet's holiest of shrines, the temple was built to honor the marriage of Tang princess Wencheng to King SongtsenGampo. It was built on a strict geomantic scheme and houses a pure gold statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni that was brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng. The inner sanctum of the temple has a prayer wheel-lined route for pilgrims called the Nangkhor, while the outer sanctum has the Barkhor, a holy circuit in which pilgrims circle in a clockwise direction.
